Object history | The fireback probably specifically relates to Sir Edward Francis, who, as seneschal to the 9th Earl of Northumberland at Petworth in Sussex, took over the running of the estate there in 1606 when his master was committed to the Tower of London because of his implication in the Gunpowder Plot [information from Jeremy Hodginson, 2013]. |
