WINDOW GRILLE Wrought iron Germany; 17th century From the 16th century onwards,window grilles became comon in many southern European countries as window openings became larger. Glazed windows were uncommon at this date because of the high cost of glass. Grilles provided security, while at the same time allowing air circulation. This one is from a house in Clotten on the river Moselle. Museum No. 989-1893(07/1994)
