Fireback
1650-1700 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This fireback, one of several similar designs, was made in England when objects in the Dutch taste were hugely fashionable after the accession in 1689 of King William III (1650-1702) who was Prince of Orange and Dutch by birth. Pattern-makers in England adopted the styles of firebacks being imported from Europe and it is possible that the pattern-makers themselves may have been immigrant Huguenot craftsmen.
