Woodblock Print

1/1851-12/1853
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This print depicts a gathering at the home of the Danjūrō family, one of the most celebrated acting dynasties. Ichikawa Danjūrō VIII is wiping his face, surrounded by his many brothers. In the middle is lwai Kumesaburō III, who specialised in women's roles. Prints such as this satisfied curiosity about the lives of actors in much the same way as magazine articles about the rich and famous do today.
