Electrotype pattern of Pistol 20. Electrotype of Gittern The untrimmed copper impression of a pistol is a type pattern. This is the first stage in the electrotyping process and is kept so that new moulds can be made from it when multiple copies of an object are required and the original work is too fragile or inaccessible. Copies are ornamental rather than functional. All the moving parts of the firing mechanism on the original iron pistol, in the Imperial Arsenal in Russia, are fixed still in the single copper impression. The copper rendering of the gittern would play very differently from the 14th-century boxwood original, now in the British Museum.
