Cast iron
England; 1850-1900
The cast iron hall-stand was an essential part of Victorian house furnishing. This example was produced by the Coalbrookdale Company, Shropshire, and is one of a wide variety of stand designs featured in their catalogues during the mid to late 19th century, most of which reflect the hignly ornamented taste of the period. The cast iron scallop shell plates at the foot of the stand are painted white in imitation of porcelain.
