POT HOOK Steel, etched and pierced Germany; 17th century The pot hook, called variously 'cotrall', 'jib-crook', 'hanger' and 'tramelle', was a common kitchen tool from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. A precursor of the chimney crane (examples to your right), it was used for suspending pots above the fire. It is decorated with finely etched inscriptions, animals and figures. The unidentified maker's mark FB is stamped twice at the bottom. Museum No. M.14-1994(07/1994)
