Brief description
A pair of globes, one celestial and one terrestrial, each inscribed with dedications and each on a mahogany stand. English, ca. 1790-1820.
Physical description
A pair of globes, one celestial and one terrestrial.
Each on a mahogany stand with three reeded legs, joined by three straight stretchers meeting at the centre in a circular panel fitted with a compass.
Both globes are inscribed with dedications from 'W & J. M. Bardin' to the Rev. Nevil Maskelyne, Astronomer Royal (celestial globe) and to the Rt. Honorable Sir Joseph Banks, President of the Royal Society (terrestrial globe).

Height of stand measured 14/1/2010. Dimensions (height and diameter of globe) converted from imperial measurements taken from F&W Dept Register.
Marks and inscriptions
  • The celestial globe is inscribed: 'To the Rev. Nevil Maskelyne, D. D., F. R. S Astronomer Royal This New British Celestial Globe containing the Positions of nearly 6000 Stars, Clusters, Nebulae, Planetary Nebulae Etc: correctly computed & laid down for the year 1800, from the latest observations and discoveries by Dr Maskelyne, Dr Herschel, the Revd., Mr Wollaston etc. etc. Is respectfully Dedicated by his most obedient Servants W & J. M. Bardin'
  • The Terrestrial globe is inscribed: 'To the Rt. Honorable Sir Joseph Banks, Bart., K. B. President of the Royal Society. This new British Terrestrial Globe Containing all the latest Discoveries and Communications from the most correct and authentic Observations and Surveys to the year 1843. By Capt Cook and more recent Navigators. Engraved from an accurate Drawing by Mr. Arrowsmith, Geographer. Is respectfully Dedicated by his most obedient Hble Servant W & J M Bardin'
