ca. 1500-1600 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Gilt leather wall hanging of eight panels with fourteen borders. The borders are placed on either side, down the middle, and on the top. Each panel has a pattern of two broad bands, one containing four and the other three lozenge shaped compartments with leafy outlines; each compartment is filled with an artichoke and leaves, in the intermediate spaces are floral scrolls. At the top left a painted scene with a man and two women at the door of a chamber, in which is a man lying in bed. Along the top of the whole is a border composed of two depressed arches each enclosing two winged figures bearing a wreath; the spandrels also contain similar figures. Between and on either side of the two panels are vertical borders, each border composed of four groups of three enriched columns surmounted by a crown. The gilded pattern, which has painted outlines, has been punched with several different stamps. Both sides and the top of the hanging have fringing-edges. The top border does not fit with the panel.
