1550-1599 (made)
Place of origin

Chest front of walnut, carved in the solid with three oblong compartments surrounded by a border of scrolling stems with leaves and berries; the centre compartment is occupied with floral scrollwork on either side of a scrolled shield, bearing a lion rampant holding a pair of compasses; the two side compartments are each similarly ornamented with floral scrolls and a large scrolled cartouche containing an oval boss. The three 'panels' are defined by half round, nailed and mitred mouldings (probably replaced). The back of the chest front has been cut out to receive a lock (missing). On the back is a fragment of pasted, printed paper.

The front consists of a single plank of walnut cut at each end with four dovetails (originally also nailed).
