Door

1550-1599 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Two doors from a cabinet; each is carved in the solid(?) with an architectural scene in perspective, consisting of portions of a house and a round-headed archway. The front of the arch is decorated with a band of oval medallions containing bosses, and is supported on two fluted pilasters; the soffit is enriched with coffers containing rosettes. French, Lyons; second half of the 16th century.

Each door is made of 3 vertical boards, butt joined. Across each door at the top and bottom a thin batten c5mm thick has been inset across the 3 boards, with a later, more substantial batten nailed over the top. Two modern full-width battens have been screwed across the double door unit for display purposes. On the outer (hinge) edge of each door, about 6" from the top and bottom, a thin mortise has been cut for a metal hinge, with remnants of nails and tearing indicating where the hinges (now missing) were fitted. The right hand door, on its reverse, has the shadow and nail remnants for a lock but no keyhole is visible. There is some evidence on the top innter corner of the left hand door of filler where a bolt might have been fitted, but otherwise there is not clear evidence of a bolt.
