Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Cushion cover of embroidered linen with white linen thread and cord and small black beads in satin stitch and couched work with drawn threadwork and cutwork with needlepoint fillings. The cover is divided into three bands by narrow bands of geometric openwork. In each section an identical complicated design features sirens, both large and small, oak leaves and acorns, small birds and geometric devices. The cover is bordered by triangles of needlepoint lace (punto in aria) to which are attached ten tassels of white linen cord plaited over a wooden core from which hang numerous little bobbles formed of turk's head knots. The back of the cover is made of linen which is more recent, as are the linen covered buttons and the small loops for fastening.
The embroidery is concentrated on islands of linen but the majority of the ground has been cut into a grid of 0.75 inch squares over which the reticella lace has been worked. The vandykes and tassels are later additions.
