Place of origin |
A man’s court coat with stripes of light blue silk and dark blue uncut silk velvet, embroidered with silk floss in shades of green, pink, terracotta, blue, lilac, yellow and white in a pattern of large flowers.
It was heavily altered in the late 19th century for theatre costume. Deep tucks were made in the fronts at the waist to give them a straighter line; the collar was shortened and the cuffs made deeper and wider. The coat was completely relined with linen and striped blue cotton; the velvet patched in many places. Machine-lace ruffles sewn to the inside of the cuffs.
