Flounce

1700-1725 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Flounce of needle lace. A broad panel of heavy needle lace in the style of Venetian gros point but worked mainly in Hollie point instead of Venetian buttonhole stitch. The raised outlines are of couched linen thread and are not buttonholed as in Italian lace.

Solid design of scrolling branching stems bear Baroque leaves and flowers. There are crowns above and shields in the centres of some flowers, but they are not marked with proper heraldic devices.

Slightly altered, and most of the brides are replacements. Fragments of Italian needlepoint have been added at the narrow ends to fill out the rectangle.
