Map sampler with panel of cream-coloured satin and backed with linen canvas. Embroidered with couched chenille thread, polychrome silks, and black silk in long and short, satin, stem and back stitches.
In the centre is an oval panel containing a map of England and Wales; the counties are outlines with different coloured chenille threads and their names and those of the major towns are embroidered with black silk. The map is inscribed 'A MAP OF ENGLAND AND WALES. J. COX. 1794.' (The name of the publisher).
The map is surrounded by a wreath of naturalistic rose-buds, pansies and other flowers.
The panel has never been mounted and the thick tape, by which it was secured to the embroidery frame, is still attached.
