Textile Fragment

ca. AD500-900 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

A partial, rectangular, panel of woven wool attached to a backing of woven linen. Possibly Egyptian, ca. AD500-900. Possibly from a furnishing. The backing is of undyed linen; 8x13 tpc (sys.1 x sys.2) and has two extra, triangular pieces folded underneath and sewn down with linen thread. Stitching that holds the decorative panel onto the backing can be seen on this side. The decorative side is in poor condition. Heart shapes have been woven in linen, in rows and then filled in with red wool. Beneath each heart is a blue shape like a capital M - only a few remain. The panel is sewn to the backing around the edges, with a whip stitch.
