Place of origin

Bed cover of fine cotton with a whitework centre and bobbin lace border. Almost square. The edges of the central panel is finished with a wide hem worked with a hem-stitched ladder. Tightly gathered border is whip-stitched onto the central panel and the border is trimmed with a deep edging of lace.

The centre is embroidered in satin and stem stitches. Coiling sprays of flowers fill the corners and extend to meet in the centre of each side. Smaller sprays of flowers, linked by bows, form a central square and within this are the initials 'T M S'.

The lace is bobbin lace of the large-scale Torchon type, and it has a simple pattern of large diamonds filled with several different mesh grounds.
