Christening robe and sleeves of ivory silk satin. The robe skirt is lined, bound and the front edges widely bordered with pale pink silk sarsenet. The bodice and sleeves are lined with linen and edged with pink sarsenet. The unpleated bodice has shoulder straps, opens at the front, with closed skirts, pleated at the sides. The sleeves are short and straight, each with a cuff faced with pink sarsenet. A wide looped fringe of ivory silk twist edges the front skirts, hem and cuffs. The front edges of the skirt are decorated with 5 bows of 1⅜-inch (3.4 cm) wide ivory silk grosgrain ribbon edged with pink.

Marks and inscriptions | 'Christening Robe 17th century. My father's mother's uncle's gown and the robe all his children wore. It was last worn by the late Rev F. Umpleby born at Snaith Hall near Pollington Yorkshire Aug 9th 1842 & christened Aug 29th 1842. The said gentleman afterwards became Vicar of Oswaldwich (St Thomas Church)' (Handwritten label attached to gown) |
