This marble fragment showing two lions devouring a sheep was made in Campania, Southern Italy, in about 1200. This fragment probably formed part of an ambone: the exact position would have been at the front of the ambone, under the feet of a figure supporting the lectern. A complete ambone of this type, dating to around 1200, is in the church of San Giovanni del Toro in Ravello, near Salerno.
