This plaquette showing the Resurrection is made by Giovanni Bernardi in Italy in the 16th century.
It is moulded from a crystal relief made for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese (1547) now at Copenhagen and belongs to a series among which also is an Adoration of the Shepherds and a Flagellation (both in Berlin K.F.M.).
Giovanni Desiderio Bernardi (1494-1553) was an Italian gem-engraver and medallist. He was first instructed as a gem-engraver by his father, the goldsmith Bernardo Bernardi (1463-1553).

On the ground beside the sepulchre are six soldiers, one of whom looks into the open tomb, another gazes upwards in astonishment, and the remainder are asleep. The corners are filled with foliate ornament. |
