This medal is an award of the Society of Arts and was first used from about the year 1854 replacing an earlier award engraved by William Wyon.

The society of Arts was founded in 1754 and in 1843 Prince Albert was installed as its fifth president. In 1847 the Society was granted its royal charter; permission to call it the Royal Cociety of Arts was granted in 1908.
