This plaquette depicting a Sacrifice to Priapus, is made by a Master signing L.C.I and it was intended for a lamp lid. The Master L.C.I. was a medallist apparently working in Padua, or perhaps Milan, working in close connexion with Riccio. The artist hasn't been identified, nor has either form of the signature or monogram been explained.
In Greek mythology, Priapos was a god for fertility, livestock, plants and male genitalia. He was best known for his large, permanent erection, which led to the medical term priapism.

Physical description | A tripod vessel stands before an ithyphallic herm of Priapus. Left a woman is placing an offering in it. Left a kneeling woman, half naked, with her hands raised in adoration, and a third woman lifting a wreath towards the image. In the exergue, in relief, L.C.I. The attachment at bottom, is bordered by volutes and terminates in a pierced shell. |
