Medal

Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This bronze medal shows the bust / self portrait of the sculptor and architect Francesco Da Sangallo.

Sangallo (1494 – 1576), was the son of Giuliano da Sangallo. He was in 1506 - together with his father and Michelangelo - in Rome when the Laokoon group was discovered. This experience had a great influence on his style, which was quite unique among the other 16th century sculptors. His style incorporated textual realism and emotional expressionism. He was in the 1520s an assistant to Michelangelo, working in the New Sacristy in San Lorenzo, Florence. There he carved the marble friezes of decorative masks. In 1560s he became co-founder of the Accademia del Disegno in Florence.
