This medal depicting Niccolo Verzi of Capodistria is amde by Giovanni del Cavino in Padua in the middle of the 16 th century.
The medallist Giovanni di Bartolommeo dal Cavino, called Giovanni Cavino (1500-1570) was a medallist, whose oevre consists of more than 100 medals. Bassiano was his friend and a noted antiquarian scholar and collector of ancient coins. Probably under his supervision Cavino made many medals of ancient subject, which caused lots of debate and controversy towards his status as a medallist. Some see him as a shameless forger, others as an intelligent medallist evoking the ancient world.
