This marble column carved with busts of Saints, cross-devices and stylised acanthus is Romanesque, made in Venice, in ca. 1200.
The column is presumably one of four and may have been part of a ciborium, possibly from the Church of San Salvatore on Murano.

Physical description
Two zones of vertical strips of intertwined stylised acanthus leaves are separated in the middle of the column by a band of interlaced roundels containing alternately two busts of Saints and two cross-devices. At the top and bottom, a beaded border. The column is set on a moulded base.

Bought from Mr. G.F. Williams, for £280, in 1961.
