This kneeling angel holding a candlestick is made by Simone Bianco. Bianco was born at Loro Ciuffena, Tuscany. He is first time recorded in 1512, when he received a commission for three reliefs of scenes from the Old Testament for the Chapel of the Sacrament in the Duomo at Treviso. The Anonimo Morelliano records two works by him in the collection of Andrea Odoni in Venice. The last documentary reference to his activity occurs in 1548.

Physical description
The angel is shown turned to the left kneeling on both knees. He has a belt round his waist, and a twist of drapery floats out behind and beneath the left wing. The remainder of the body is nude. With both arms he holds a candelabrum with hexagonal base. On a deep oblong plinth.

Given by Sir Thomas Barlow, G.B.E. Previously in the Jakob Goldschmidt collection, Berlin, and in the Castiglioni collection, Vienna (sale, Berlin, 1930, No. 119). Later sold at Cologne and subsequently in the Garbaty collection, New York.
