This medal represents Lord Kitchener and was made by Jules Prosper Legastelois (1885-1931).
Lord Kitchener won military fame by his reconquest of the Sudan at Omdurman in 1898 when he defeated Sudanese Dervishes and avenged the death of General Gordon. At the outbreak of World War I he became Secretary of State for War and volunteers, 'Kitchener's Armies'. He drowned when the cruiser 'Hampshire' was sunk by a German mine in 1916'.
The propaganda purpose of this medal is indicated by the stern expression and concentrated gaze of Kitchener.
Legastelois modelled medals commemorating other World War I generals, including Generals Joffre, Pershing, Foch and Petain, as well as World War I victories such as the Victory of the Marne, 1914.
