This plaquette celebrates the English-Belgian manufactuer John Cockerill (1790-1840) and his Society. His family moved to Belgium in 1802. He was manager in a factory in Belgium and later went to Berlin were he established a woollen factory. Later he also set up a foundry and factory at Seraing in Belgium.
At the time of his death he had built a reputation as a humanitarian employer, and additionally as the founder of the Belgian manufacturing industry.
His company became the Société pour l'Exploitation des Etablissements John Cockerill (1842) and later Société Anonyme Cockerill-Ougree (1955).
