This bone relief medallion was probably made by the workshop of the Embriachi in Italy (Florence or Venice) in about 1390-1420.
The Workshop of the Embriachi was an Italian family of entrepreneurs and carvers. The precise location and the organization of the workshop is unknown, although c. 1431 there was evidently a workshop in Venice, in the area of S Luca, where various members of the family are recorded.
This plaque must originally have come from a casket depicting pairs of male and female figures, such as cat. no. 278.

The donor was K. D. H. Cattanach Esq., Swindon, Wilts, ho gave the relief to the museum in 1984. |
