Portraits of historical British 'worthies' were highly popular in the eighteenth century. Ivory medallions and portrait busts of great men and women were widely produced. John Milton was frequently portrayed during the eighteenth century and revered as both a great poet and as a political voice. A number of versions of this ivory portrait are known. This medallion is probably made by Gaspar van der Hagen in ca. 1740-69, after John Michael Rysbrack.
