Brief description | Panel the Crucifixion of St Peter, alabaster English ca. 1450. |
Physical description | Alabaster panel, the crucifixion of St. Peter. The haloed and bearded figure of the saint head downwards on the cross. His arms are spreadeagled, his hands bound by ropes to the horizontal beam against which his head rests. A rope over the bottom of his gown secures his legs to the base of the cross. The smaller figure of the Emperor, crowned and bearded and wearing gown, belt and a tippet, is represented with ass's ears, and stands on the left of the panel, looking down at the saint. A bearded figure wearing a gown and hood stands on a higher level at the top right-hand corner of the panel, looking down at the saint. At the bottom corners of the panel two figures wearing caps and short tunics look downwards and pull with both hands at the ropes binding the saint's wrists to the cross. A bearded figure wearing a cap and a short tunic stands opposite the Emperor, looking up and gesturing at the rope around the saint's ankles. A small figure standing behind the Emperor at the top-left hand corner of the panel bends to the centre, fastening the rope round the saint's ankles. |
