This memorial bust of a child wearing a shroud stands on a base in the form of a book, almost certainly a bible, surrounded by a wreath os immortelles and a rosebud. It was made by Samuel James Bouverie Haydon.
Haydon exhibited a 'Posthumous marble bust' of the 'Child of the Rev. F. Fanshawe' at the Royal Academy in 1861 which was perhaps this present piece.
Haydon (1815-1891) was originally trained as a lawyer in Exeter, but later travelled to London to train under the sculptor Edward Hodges Baily. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1840 and 1876.
