This terracotta bust (and the bust 7581-1861), are representing most likely two Saints (it was formerly suggested they were Shepherds). It is made by Giovanni Francesco Gonelli, also called Il Cieco da Gambassi in Florence in the first half of the 17th century.

Gonelli (1603-1664) was an Italian sculptor. He was born in Gambassi (according to Baldinucci). In 1632 he apparently became blind and therefore was known as 'Cieco da Gambassi'. There is some doubt as to the extent of his disability, since in 1637 he followed a course at the Florence Academy, and he later made portrait busts of the Grand-Duke Ferdinand II and Pope Urban VIII.

Physical description

This bust is probably the head of one of the Shepherds, in a composition of the Nativity. The head is almost presented in full face, slightly downturned to the spectator's right. The figure wears and open shirt and tunic.
