The scene is set on a platform of ruined masonry. Behind, to the right, is a broken column. In the centre the Virgin is seated beside the manger, with St. Joseph standing behind her. To the left of this group appears the ox eating straw from the manger and to the right, behind St. Joseph, the ass's head. In the right foreground kneels an adoring shepherd whose wide-brimmed hat lies on the ground.
