On acquisition the identity of the subject was not known and the piece was entitled Boy in Highland Dress. It is made by Robert Jackson (active 1840 - 1878) in England in ca. 1872. In 1867 Jackson exhibited at the Royal Academy 'The Hon A. Campbell, youngest son of the Earl of Cawdor', possibly a plaster version of the present piece.

Physical description
Statue, marble. A young boy stands with crossed legs, his weight on the left foor and looking to his rught. In his right hand he holds the handle of a landing net, which rests among leaves on the ground. His right elbow is supported by a tree stump and his left arm is akimbo. He wears a short jacket and waistcoat, kilt, sporran and spats. Inscribed on the side of the circular base.

Object history
Included in the second day sale of the furniture and effects of Viscount Emlyn, Stackpole Court, held by Strutt and Parker, Lofts & Warner, London, on 20 November 1962, lot 557. Bought by the Museum for £350 in 1969 (Hildburgh Bequest) from David Kenrick Antiques, 198 Fulham Rd, SW10.
Historical context
Sold in the Stackpole Court (Pembrokeshire) sale on 20th November 1962, described as 'A white sculptured marble statue. A Campbell wearing the kilt, 4 ft 10 in high.'
