This is a fragment of a small figure, probably originating from Egypt or Syria from perhaps the 5th century.
It is said to have been acquired in Cairo. The immediate reaction is to identify the figure as one of the Magi and date it to about the 5th century. Work in black stone of this kind might have been done in Nubia, or alternatively in Syria and Palestine.

Fragment of a small figure with a beard and wearing a Phrygian cap; his arms are outstretched with an unidentified object, probably a gift, held in both hands. On the back of the figure are two protuberances, hatched on the surface, which are difficult to explain.
