This ivory carving in high relief of the Virgin and Child is made in Eastern France or the Upper Rhine, in about 1320. This applique group can be associated with a Virgin and Child statuette of a similar size and style in the Musée du Louvre, attributed by Danielle Gaborit-Chopin to Eastern France and dated to the beginning of the forteenth century. The facial type of the present Virgin, with its narrowed eyes, broad nose and small mouth, may be compared with those of many stone Virgins in Lorraine and Alsace, and seems to prefigure the distinctive countenances of the statuettes traditionally connected with the so-called 'Kremsmünster Master'.
Three dimensional images of the Virgin and Child were ubiquitous from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries, produced in a wide range of materials and sizes and testifying the overwhelming devotion to th Virgin. Together with the Crucifixion, statues and statuettes of the Virgin and Child were the pricipal objects of devotion in the Christian Church, and vast numbers were made for ecclesisastical, monastic and private worship.

The Virgin is seated on a backless throne with cushion, facing to the right, wearing an ivory crown, her mantle fastened at the breast with a jewel. In her right hand are the remains of a spray or bunch of flowers. The Child is half sitting, half standing on her left side, holding an apple in his left hand and blessing with his right. The surface is a little rubbed but the condition is good. |
