This bronze medal depicts Paul III (Alessandro Farnese), bareheaded and wearing a cope. On the reverse side there is a bird's eye view of Rome. Other examples of this medal have an additional inscription on the obverse side recording that the medal was struck for the Jubilee year of 1550.
Paul III was Pope from 1534 to his death in 1549. Despite becoming Pope at an uncertain time following the Protestant Reformation, he presided over a period of Catholic revival known as the Counter Reformation characterised by the establishment of new religious orders and the meeting of the Council of Trent.
