This bronze medal represents Paul III (Alessandro Farnese), bareheaded and wearing a cope. On the reverse side there is the Farnese coat-of-arms, surmounted by the Papal tiara and crossed keys.

Paul III was Pope from 1534 to his death in 1549. Despite becoming Pope at an uncertain time following the Protestant Reformation, he presided over a period of Catholic revival. In particular he initiated the Council of Trent to deal with contentious issues.

This is a posthumous medal by Paladino and the mould is preserved in Rome.
