This medal depicts Philip V (Bourbon)(1683-1746), King of Spain and Sicily on horseback and is made by Antonio di Gennaro.
Maria Antonia di Gennaro was born at Naples where he was working around 1702 for the King. Between 1713 and 1725 he resided at Vienna, where he made his best known works for the Imperial Court. In 1730, we find him again at Naples.
This is an unrecorded medal which dates to the first year in which Gennaro is known to have been in the Royal service in Naples.

Obverse: Philip V, wearing a long wig and flowing, classical dress, on pacing horse to left; inscribed.
Reverse: Seated female figure emblematic of Naples, seated on the edge of the bay, looking back over the right shoulder, a cornucopia in the left hand, supporting a shield and spear in the right; Vesuvius in the background; Inscription.
Marks and inscriptions
  • 'PHILLIPPVS.V.HISPANIARVM.ET.VTRIVSQ:SICIL:REX' (obverse, around the edge.)
  • 'ADVENTVI.PRINCIPIS.FOELICISSIMO' / 'ANT.DE.IANVUARIO.NEAPOLITANVS.F.' (reverse, around the edge and reverse in the moulding supporting the figure)
