Aux Braves

Plaquette
ca. 1918 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This bronze plaquette was made by J. Aumont in the early 20th century France. Aumont's twentieth century medal lies stylistically within the mainstream of French nineteenth-century design, employing the convention of an idealised, allegorical female figure in classical drapery to represent the French state honouring a soldier. This plaquette idealises the conditions of war; both figures inhabit an undefined landscape of clouds and mist, with only the suggestion of smoke in the distance to hint at the reality of the appalling conditions endured by millions of soldiers.
