1919 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This bronze plaquette was made by Georges Scott and Hilaire Cuzin in France, 1919. This plaquette commemorates reunited Alsace with France. The Treaty of Versailles which was ratified by Germany on 9 July 1919 demanded the return of Alsace-Lorraine to France, an area comprising the present French départments of Haut-Rhin and Bas-Rhin, and Moselle. After the Franco-Prussian war of 1870/71, Alsace Lorraine was incorporated into the German Empire, for both nationalistic and economic reasons. Between 1871 and 1914 this annexaxion inspired anti-German feeling in France, and was not conducive to good relations between the two nations after 1919.
