This bronze medal was made by Henri Allouard in France, 1916. This medal commemorates the Battle of the Yzer, the dramatic defence of the last parcel of Belgian territory against German invasion in the early stages of the war.

Medal, the battle of the Yzer, struck bronze, by Henri Allouard, French, 20th century, 1916
Physical description
Obv., female personification of France dressed in a soldier's great-coat stands in the centre in a defiant pose, arms crossed. To the right, French marines stand up to their knees in water firing rifles; to the left more marines run to the attack, one in the act of falling wounded. At France's feet the French cockerel crows over the defeated Prussian eagle. Rev., portrait busts of Admiral Ronarch and General Foch supported by branches of oak and laurel. The edge has the incuse cornucopia of Paris Mint and BRONZE.
