This bronze medal was made by Henri Allouard in France, 1917. The blank space on the memorial on the obverse underlines the subject of this medal, the hundreds of thousands who fell in the battlefields and have no known graves.

Medal, Aux Héros Inconnus, struck bronze, by Henri Allouard, French, 20th century, 1917
Physical description
Obv., two female personifications, possibly Victory and Fame, flank a memorial with an urn on top of it. To the right Fame, crowned with oak and carrying the marty's palm, stands on the base of the memorial and drapes a flag over the urn. To the left Victory, winged and crowned with laurels, sits with her trumpet and indicates with her right hand the inscription on the memorial. Rev., an angel, holding the marty's palm frond and a wreath of oak leaves, hovers over dead and dying soldiers and the wreckage of battle. In the background, a rising sun. The edge has the incuse cornucopia of Paris Mint mark and BRONZE.
