These altar candlesticks are made in Venice in ca. 1500-1525. They display the symbols of St. Mark (the winged lion, here seated on a book) and St. John (the eagle, here standing on a book). This suggests that they formed part of a set of at least four candlesticks, with others displaying the symbols of Sts. Luke and Matthew.

Physical description | Two candlesticks with a slight variation. The triangular base rests on three dolphins and has on each side a winged lion seated on a book, the emblem of St. Mark (this is for M700-1910) and an eagle standing on a book on each side, as the emblem of St. John (this is for M700A-1910). The upper parts are of baluster form, decorated with gadroons, garlands, acanthus-leaf and guilloche ornament. |
