This medal was the first to be issued by the Art Union of London which was founded in 1837 as a society to foster interest in the fine arts and to encourage British artists and manufacturers of decorative wares. The publication of the medals, which was planned in 1842, was specifically intended to revive interest in medallic art.
This medal represents the portrait painter Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-92), in profile, to the left. On the reverse side, the infant Hercules is shown seated on a skin strangling two snakes.
