The sculptor Thomas Banks was awarded medals from the Royal Academy of Arts for classic bas reliefs and statues and was the Royal Academy gold medallist in 1770.

This medal is one of the series of Art Union medal. The bust of Banks is based on a drawing by George Dance, R.A and the reverse shows part of the decoration of the tomb of Sir Eyre Coote in Westminster Abbey.
