John Gibson was the leading English sculptor of his generation working in the Neo-classical tradition. He is depicted on the obverse side of this medal, in profile to the left while on the reverse side there is a representation of one of his sculptures, Grecian Hunter with his dog.

This is one of a series of medals commissioned by the Art Union, an organisation established in 1837 to foster interest in the fine arts. Between 1842 and 1887 they sponsored a group of thirty medals each with a portrait of an eminent artist, together with an illustration of their work. The dies for this medal were commissioned in 1866 and 30 silver medals were allotted in 1874.
