This bronze medal depicts the Irish painter Daniel Maclise. After exhibiting for the first time at the Royal Academy in 1829 he mainly produced subject and historical pictures including scenes from Shakespeare. In 1846 he was commissioned to paint murals in the House of Lords. The reverse side of the medal depicts a scene from Hamlet based on Maclise's 1842 painting, The Play-scene.
This is one of a series of medals commissioned by the Art Union of London, which was established in 1837 to encourage interest in the fine arts. Between 1842 and 1887 they sponsored a group of thirty medals each with a portrait of an eminent artist, together with an illustration of their work.
