Joseph Mallord William Turner was a British Romantic landscape painter, watercolourist and printmaker whose work elevated the statis of landscape painting. He is depicted in profile to the left on the obverse side of this medal. On the reverse there is a detail from Turner's painting 'The Fighting Temeraire'.

This medal is one of a series commissioned by the Art Union of London which was founded in 1837 to promote interest in the fine arts. Between 1842 and 1887 they sponsored a group of thirty medals each with a portrait of an eminent artist, together with an illustration of their work.
